From The Inside Out: Effective Ways to Manage Stess
Los Gatos
May 25, 2013
10AM - 4PM
Breathing – Breathing exercises can be therapeutic, and with enough practice, can become an easy technique for stress management. We will discuss the health benefits of diaphragmatic breathing and the 4‐7‐8 breathing technique.
Mindfulness ‐ Mindfulness is the quality of attention and awareness we bring to the events in our lives. Most of our stress is caused by worrisome thoughts about the future. Practicing mindfulness will bring your focus to the present and is a great why to remove anxiety.
Meditation ‐ Meditation is stillness of the body and mind (quieting the “babbler”). Through practice, you can learn to “tune in” to your inner self. It is an alert calmness. You remove your attention from the physical distractions that are all around you and focus within.
Visualization – also known as imagery. Visualization is the use of detailed mental pictures and descriptions in order to create a sensory experience including emotional and physical sensations. Visualizing positive events and experiences can shift your focus from worry to possibility.
Journaling – Journaling allows you to create a safe place for expressing thoughts, feeling and ideas on paper. The process of journaling will allow you to prioritize your thinking, see emotionally charged events from a new perspective and purposefully release unwanted thoughts and feelings.
Creating Lists ‐ Creating itemized lists will allow you to more easily prioritize your time, break overwhelming tasks into “chunks” or milestones and organize the chaos of uncompleted tasks in your mind.
Setting Goals ‐ Setting Goals requires that you know where you want to go in order to set specific, time bound steps to reach your destination. When you know where you want to be, it is much easier to focus and stay on task and tune out potential stressors.
